THE WHITE NIGHT 2017 at AQSHF
The Central State Film Archive of Albania is pleased once again to celebrate the annual White Night, an evening of artistic events taking place all over Tirana this Wednesday night, November 29th. The archive will be open to the public, free of charge, for two very special 35mm film screenings in our comfortable eighty seat theater.
First up at 17:30, a showing of the acclaimed 2003 Albanian drama LULE TE KUQE, LULE TE ZEZA (Red Flowers, Black Flowers) considered one of the most fascinating films of the post-Kinostudio era. The feature stars some of the shining lights of Albanian cinema including director Mevlan Shanaj, Yllka Mujo, Kastriot Caushi, Elia Zaharia and the late Bujar Lako. Director and actor Mevlan Shanaj and screenwriter Natasha Lako will be present afterwards to join the audience in discussion.
At 20:30, our White Night double film feature continues with a print of Paolo and Vittorio Taviani’s 1982 Italian Second World War fantasy drama NETET E YJEVE QE BININ (The Night of San Lorenzo). This film won the Grand Jury Special Prize at the Cannes film festival. Critic Pauline Kael said of the Taviani Brothers film: “THE NIGHT OF THE SHOOTING STARS is so good it’s thrilling. This new film encompasses a vision of the world. Comedy, tragedy, vaudeville, melodrama – they’re all here, and inseparable. In its feeling and completeness, SHOOTING STARS may be close to the ranks of Jean Renoir’s bafflingly beautiful GRAND ILLUSION.” Presented by the AQSHF and the Albanian Cinematheque, LULE TE KUQE LULE TE ZEZA will be shown in Albanian with English subtitles and THE NIGHT OF THE SHOOTING STARS is in the Italian language with Albanian subtitles.
