FLAMES OF REVOLUTION screening and a talk with Profesor Ardian Ndreca

From the series 'Treasures from the Archive' ...
1967 was one of the most crucial years during the communist dictatorship. Leader Enver Hoxha declared Albania the world's first atheist state, banning all religious practice. After suffering two decades of persecution, the remaining churches, mosques and tekkes were shut down or converted into cinemas or sports centers. Priests and imams were put on public show trials. Copying China's Cultural Revolution, young communists were sent all over Albania to destroy religious buildings and convince people to give up their faith. During the violent campaign, four elderly monks were killed when Shkoder's Franciscan monastery was set on fire.
A controversial documentary was made about these intense events, director Endri Keko's IN THE FLAMES OF REVOLUTION (1967). Shot by master cameramen Ilia Terpini and Niko Theodhosi, this rarely screened black and white document vividly captures this key moment in our country's history. AQSHF director Iris Elezi will be joined onstage afterward by the esteemed professor Ardian Ndreca who will provide valuable insight into the film and this traumatic time in Albania.
Please come and join us this Wednesday, February 13th at 19:00 for a screening and discussion of IN THE FLAMES OF THE REVOLUTION at the Kinema Agimi. As part of our ongoing series 'Treasures from the Archive', the film will be presented in 35mm with English subtitles.
Admission will be 300 ALL for this event.
