BITTER RICE by Giuseppe De Santis (1949)
The Albanian National Film Archive invites you this Wednesday, February 20th, 19:00 at the Kinema Agimi to experience the wonder of writer and director Giuseppe De Santis Italian classic BITTER RICE.
Nominated for an US Oscar and the Grand Prize at the 1949 Cannes Film Festival, this raw and passionate drama introduced the world to the legendary actress Silvana Mangano and leading man Vittorio Gassman.
Co-written by Italy's master screenwriter Carlo Lizzani, the film tells the tale of a female rice worker who uncovers a criminal's bold plan to rob the harvest. This powerfully tragic mix of neo-realism and melodrama set the career in motion of the hugely successful producer Dino De Laurentiis.
We are very fortunate to have an original print of this masterpiece in pristine condition. During the technical check last week we were so moved by the finale, that we burst into tears. We think you will too. Please come and join us this Wednesday, at 19:00 for an archival treasure not to be missed.
