SKËTERRË '43 (1980) 35mm film show
The Albanian National Film Archive screens this Wednesday, February 27th, 2019, 19:00 at the Kinema Agimi, an original 35mm print of Rikard Ljarja's thrilling Second World War film SKËTERRË '43 (1980).
The behind the scenes history of this Kinostudio production is nearly as dramatic as the story onscreen. In 1980, actor and director Ljarja enlisted, Bashkim Shehu, the son of the Albanian premier Mehmet Shehu, to write the films's screenplay. After completing the script, the Kinostudio technicians built a seaside full-scale prison set, the location of the film's Italian concentration camp. SKËTERRË '43 features strong and memorable performances from the leading lights of Albanian cinema: Ljarja, Xhevdet Feri, Birce Hasko, Agim Qirjaqi, Violeta Dede and Mario Ashiku.
Albania's Kinostudio personnel were at the top of their game on this film. SKËTERRË '43 is marked by Saim Kokona's bold cinematography and an extraordinarily tough score by Zef Coba.

After a handful of screenings, the film was shelved and put on a list of forbidden works. Some have seen SKËTERRË '43 as a subtle and dangerous reflection of life in communist Albania. Come see for yourself.
